How to Find Your Niche

Figuring out who you are and what you have to offer your followers will allow you to identify your niche.

You want to stand out on social media and you want to draw new users to your profile, but you're not so sure about what you want to post about that would be intriguing to the public. You need to find your niche, and honestly, this can be tricky. Certainly, you want to select a sensible niche, but you also want to select a niche that is true to your interests and passions.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a position or activity that is suitable for somebody’s talents or personality. It’s something that differentiates someone from the all of the other users on social media. A niche can be anything from yoga to music or from art to gardening; a niche can literally be anything!

If you're struggling to decide what you want to do, here are some helpful tips to guide you to find your niche:

Identify your interests and passions.

You may have already done this, but if you haven't, make a list of 10 topical interests and passion areas, immediately!

Here are a few questions to help you determine what your interests and passions are:

  • Who are you?

  • What makes you different from everyone else on social media?

  • How do you like to spend your free time?

  • What do you look forward to doing when you aren't doing it?

  • What magazines do you subscribe to?

  • What topics do you like to learn about most?

  • What clubs or organizations do you belong to?

  • What five words describe what your social media says about you?

  • What audience do you want to reach?

These are some questions that social media influencers should ask themselves. Once you’ve gone through these questions, you should have a clear understanding of what makes you stand out.

Showcase your niche.

After you’ve identified your niche, present it on your social media platforms. Target the audience you want to reach and begin to make content that reveals who you are.

Here are some tips to help you showcase your niche on social media:

  • Base your ideas around your niche, when creating content.

  • Include hashtags on your posts that are related to your niche.

  • Highlight your niche in your bio. For example, call out if you are a spiritual guru, model, public relations specialist, photographer, etc.

  • Tag other profiles that are related to the content you are posting about.

  • Create a blog where you can make more in depth content on your niche.

Final thoughts.

Keep in mind that there isn't a perfect process for finding a niche; you'll want to do some research. If you get stuck in the planning phase, you'll never get around to starting. If you believe you've found an idea that you can fully invest yourself into, take the plunge!
